24 hours in Amsterdam!

Amsterdam is a very large city with many interesting things to see and do. When you only have 24 hours to visit, it can be difficult to decide what to do and what to leave out.

In order to make the most of your 24 hours in this beautiful city, it’s best to plan ahead. Our staff at the Shelter Youth Hostels have come up with some helpful tips for exploring Amsterdam with a limited amount of time. We’ve divided their suggestions into categories and recommend choosing one or two in order to make the most of your limited time in Amsterdam!

Museums

If museums are high on your list of priorities, Amsterdam is the place for you! Many museums are within walking distance of each other, making museum hopping an easy option for travelers with a short time limit. The Van Gogh Museum and Rijksmuseum are very close together and are a great option if you’re interested in using your 24 hours in Amsterdam to enjoy some beautiful art. From here, the FOAM photography museum is easy to get to by going north on the Vijzelstraat. You can end the day at the Amsterdam Museum by walking north to the Singelgracht, which you will follow to the west. However, these are just a few of the museums Amsterdam has to offer. Our staff are always exploring museums in the city - so be sure to ask about their favorites when you’re here.

Tours

If you want to see as much of Amsterdam as possible (as well as learn about its rich history) a walking tour is your best option. Boat tours, walking tours, and carriage tours will provide you with a chance to see a lot of the city in a short amount of time. These tours are very informative and tour guides will be happy to share some fun facts for you to work into your stories when you get home.

Shopping

Some of you may want to spend every minute of your 24 hours in Amsterdam by taking advantage of its fantastic shopping. You can find many popular shops in shopping centres like De Bijenkorf and Magna plaza. Amsterdam is also filled with many small boutiques, such as those found in the Nine Streets Shopping District. And if you’re visiting on a Saturday, be sure to find out if the IJ-Hallen flea market is on. 24 hours in Amsterdam is more than enough time to shop ‘til you drop!

Nature

If you love nature and want to see the city from a greener perspective Amsterdam has several beautiful parks that are well worth exploring. The parks scattered throughout the city will provide you with hours of relaxation, enjoyment, and a chance to stretch your legs before you hop back on the train to your next destination. Westerpark from the Shelter Jordan or Vondelpark from the Shelter City can both be reached quickly by bike. The Amsterdam Forest and the Tulip markets also provide a great escape into nature, though they take a little more time to visit.

Selfie Craze

If your using your travels as an opportunity to enhance your social media appeal, 24 hours in Amsterdam is enough time to supply you with enough pictures to post long after you’re gone. (Perfect if you’re a fan of #throwbackthursday or #flashbackfriday!)

There are plenty of places for that perfect “photo-op.” Whether you’re into selfies or not, Amsterdam is packed with photo-ops like bridges crossing the canals, many beautiful buildings, your favourite celebrities at Madame Tussauds. The photo opportunities in Amsterdam are endless. Don’t forget to tag photos at the Shelter Hostels as well! You can find us on Facebook and Instagram.

Nightlife

If you only have 24 hours in Amsterdam, naturally you’ll want to make the most of every minute - this includes Amsterdam’s famous nightlife! Amsterdam is a vibrant and absolutely beautiful city at night with plenty of great places to hangout and enjoy the nightlife atmosphere and there is plenty to do. From cafes and clubs across the city, to long walks along the canals at night, Amsterdam at night is anything but boring. Be sure to ask our staff for their recommendations.

The most important thing to remember when you have such a short time in a city like Amsterdam is to prioritize and plan. You can certainly do a lot in 24 hours, but be sure to give yourself enough time at each stop. Whatever amount of time you have to spend in this beautiful city - we hope you enjoy your time in Amsterdam!
